Organizational Mission

Global Concerns Classroom (GCC) is the US-based global education program of Concern Worldwide, an international humanitarian organization working in 28 of the poorest countries to alleviate poverty and suffering through emergency response and development. Launched in 2001, GCC is an innovative and dynamic program that seeks to raise awareness of current international humanitarian issues in US youth and to empower them to take informed action. Through dynamic resources, student engagement programs, and professional development for educators, GCC prepares youth to gain the knowledge and skills needed to be globally competent for the 21st century. GCC aims to inspire youth to become active global citizens and leaders for a better future.

Students and educators grades 9-12

Formal/Informal Education

GCC’s student program combines school curriculum (standards-aligned for in-classroom and flexible for after-school programs) and out-of-school events including our Global Youth Summit, Concern to Action Showcase, and Annual Student Field Visit.

Educational Services

  • Quality Classroom Resources: Global issue guides, student-narrated videos, thought provoking posters, and themed-based unit plans. Downloadable:
  • Student Engagement Program: Open to all high schools in NYC, Chicago, and Boston, GCC’s program engages students year-long on a global theme that consists of:
    • Standards-aligned curriculum that prepare students with relevant content knowledge and 21st-century skill-building.
    • Innovative Global Youth Summit that brings students from participating schools together for a day of problem-solving, collaboration, and design.
    • School community action plans that address the global issue in a local setting, culminating in a year end Concern to Action Showcase.
    • Student Field Visit where selected student leaders participate in a week-long educational overseas trip to one of Concern’s operational countries.
  • Professional Development for Educators: GCC offers support and training for all participating educators registered for GCC’s student program. In addition, GCC provides professional development for in-service and pre-service teachers on incorporating global education in the classroom and school community.
