Organizational Mission

The New York State Afterschool Network (NYSAN) is a public-private partnership of statewide, regional and local groups dedicated to promoting young people’s safety, learning and healthy development outside the traditional classroom. NYSAN’s activities are directed toward building the capacity and commitment of communities to increase the quality and availability of afterschool and other expanded learning programs and youth services across New York State.

Geographic Location for Services

NYSAN focuses on all regions of New York State and provides support for eight Regional Networks. NYSAN also reaches national audiences through the National Network of Statewide Afterschool Networks, technical assistance organizations, and other national meetings and conferences.

Target Population

NYSAN supports school and community educators, policymakers, agency leaders, and other stakeholders and professionals serving children and youth in grades K-12 in afterschool, youth development, and expanded learning settings.

Formal/Informal Education

NYSAN focuses on expanded learning opportunities, both within and outside of schools.  NYSAN builds capacity by: promoting statewide standards of program quality, coordinating/facilitating access to professional development, fostering statewide, regional, and local partnerships, and ensuring more students and families have access to high-quality afterschool, summer, and other expanded learning opportunities and services.

Educational Services

Global Learning in Afterschool: NYSAN works with Asia Society to infuse global learning in afterschool programs, practices, and policies. NYSAN has participated in the development of tools and resources for afterschool and expanded learning educators to incorporate global learning into existing programs and/or create globally-focused programming in expanded learning settings.

Promoting Program Quality: NYSAN continues to promote the effective use of the second edition of the Network’s Afterschool Program Quality Framework, Quality Self-Assessment (QSA) Tool, and QSA Tool Users Guide through statewide conferences and convening, electronic communication, and work with policymakers and public agency administrators.
